Trust: A Look Back on My Word of the Year

At the beginning of 2015, I decided to do this whole crazy blogger thing of picking out a word that would be the theme of my entire year.

As I was thinking about what word I was going to choose for this past year, trust wasn't my original choice. But I had this nagging feeling that God was asking me to trust Him and use this year to put that trust into practice.

I had high hopes--great expectations for this year. I thought this meant that I would be trusting Him to keep growing our family, even if it was hard. I trusted Him through my first heart-killing miscarriage and the realization that I had lost a baby that I desperately wanted.

But this year, oh this year, has been by far the hardest and darkest year that I have walked through in my life. The most painful, valley ridden year that had me hanging my head, staring at the ground rather than keeping my eyes fixed where they needed to be-- on Him.

To be honest?

There were quite a few times that I didn't want to look at Him. I was angry, hurt, completely destroyed because I lost another baby, and then another, and lost our fourth when I was desperately trying to place my trust in His plan.

The thing is? I really wasn't trusting Him.

I had so many ifs.

If you give me a baby.

If you let me carry this baby to birth.

If you do this on my terms.

And I was scared. Every. Single. Time. I didn't give it to him, I didn't just allow it to happen like I should have. I allowed fear to dictate how I dealt with these losses, and subsequent pregnancies.

Do I think that it isn't a good idea to seek medical advice? Of course not. I think God works through a myriad of ways, and I've explored many options when it comes to our fertility issues, both through prayer and through medicine.

But the biggest thing I've learned this year is that even through heartache,  pain, and darkness you can still trust. It's incredibly difficult, and at times seems completely impossible, but as I've vowed to give these pains and troubles to Him every single day, my life has become all that more full.

I don't know what this next year holds for me and my family, but I do know that this year has helped me grow as a mother and a person.

Handmade Christmas: Toddler-Made Gifts

This is my first Christmas with a talking, incessantly energetic toddler that wants to help mommy with everything that she's doing. Sometimes it's exhausting having a shadow for everything I do, simply because it takes twice as long with her in tow.

But when it came to making Christmas gifts for the grandparents this year, having a little one that was so eager to do crafts was such a joy! I found some wonderful projects on Pinterest, picked up the supplies after work one day and took a morning with her to create some fun and memorable gifts for the grandparents (and for me too!)

My favorites will always be the footprint or handprint ornaments. We did one with her when she was 4 weeks old, so I'm excited to add another to our tree! I love the Santa hand, mostly because Juliet loves him so much :)

And the best part about these gifts? Totally easy to do last minute but still something that family members will love!

What is your fave project for little kids this time of year?

High Five for Friday!

Welcome back to another week of High Five for Friday, hosted by DellaKatieTif and I. We're happy you're here!

Let's get straight into this week's 5!

1. I'm excited about Christmas coming so soon, but I've got to admit that it just isn't the same anymore. It's so much more stressful as an adult, so I'm trying to focus on Jesus and the true reason for this season. I'm making a conscious effort to slow down and not try to get a million things done and stress myself out.

2. I've been slowing rewatching the show, Reign, about Mary Queen of Scots. I like it even better the second time around. So, so good! I can't wait for the new season, it definitely left me with a teaser.

3. I am really trying to clean up my diet and get active again like I was a year ago. I've got to say, it's not the easiest thing in the world to stay accountable to at this time of year. Any tips to fight these crazy cravings?

4. Check back this weekend about some fun gifts that Juliet (and any toddler!) can make. I'm excited to get to do some fun projects today to get ready for Christmas next week.

5. A Christmas movie marathon is in the works for the next week. I love getting in the Christmas mood with all my fave movies. Home Alone, The Santa Clause, Frosty, The Grinch. Any other suggestions?

How was your week? I'd love to hear!

DIY Christmas-For the Women

I've always had a love for handmade. There's just something inside of me that has this urge to create.

Around the holidays, the urge to create and bring joy to someone else peaks. I love scouring Pinterest for the projects that would fit my family and friends the best. It's fun for me to try new things, and especially fun to get to see the joy that it brings those around me.

Since I do make quite a bit of handmade gifts, it's a challenge to stretch myself to find something new to do that's fresh and exciting for me, but also a surprise for who I'm gifting. Until Christmas, I will be sharing my fave handmade Christmas gift and decor ideas!

Today, it's all about the ladies in your life. Moms, sisters, BFFs, cousins, aunts. These are some of my fave ideas for the women you love most.

The sugar scrubs are so scrumptious and so simple to make, not to mention perfect for cold weather dry skin.

I also have a love for crochet, so all kinds of crocheted cold weather accessories are always on my list! I'm especially loving the chunky cowls, which even a beginner crocheter could easily get done in time for Christmas.

Christmas decor and accessories are always a fun gift to give. Even though they won't get a ton of use out of them this season, it's always nice to get a few new things to display for years to come. Sometimes those are my favorite gifts!

What are your fave ideas for the women in your life? Not handmade options are always welcome!

High Five for Friday

Welcome back to another week of High Five for Friday, hosted by Della, Katie, Tif and I. We're happy you're here!

Every week we feature one of our wonderful bloggers. This week it's Bri from School in Our Slippers. I've found another Gilmore Girls lover! Head over and give her some H54F love.

I'm switching it up a little bit this week and sharing 5 projects I'm working on or want to work on soon!

1. Christmas stockings
My goal is to have all 3 of ours done next week. Hopefully it actually happens! I'm so excited that they will not only be handmade, but that we will finally have matching stockings that I can easily duplicate of necessary.

2. Christmas Wreath
I'm not sure exactly what I want in this department, but it's got to be something flatter than a regular wreath to fit between our doors. Ideas are welcome!

3. Hot Chocolate Ornaments
These little ornaments are adorable and perfect for my coworkers, without going overboard. Juliet could even help with these, which will make it an even more fun project.

4. Gingerbread Hat
I absolutely love this little hat! We're currently selling it on our Facebook page for Mama Bird Studio, but they are just too cute not to make a few for Christmas gifts too!

5. Popcorn Strings!
Did anyone else do this as a child? I absolutely loved seeing string popcorn and cranberries on my tree growing up, but haven't done it since I've been out of my parents house. I'm hoping I'll still get to it so Juliet can experience the fun too!

How was your week? I'd love to hear!

High Five for Friday!

Hey all! Welcome to another week of High Five for Friday with Della, TiffKatie and I!

1. We've finally all gotten over the stomach bug that we've been passing to each other the last week. And it feels so good to get back to our normal routine, including me getting back to blogging more!

2. We have our Christmas tree up! This is my first year to have a real Christmas tree, and we actually went and cut it down ourselves which was so much fun.

3. My friend and I started a handmade business in the last few weeks! We're still starting out slower, so orders are just being taken on Facebook, but it's been such a great experience! We're excited to get some more products completed and eventually get our Etsy shop up running.  Go check out Mama Bird Studio today!

4. I finally found Home Alone on DVD! I honestly never really think to look for it until Christmas rolls around, and luckily it was right there smack dab in the front of an aisle display at Walmart.  I have a feelig it's going to be watched quite a bit this holiday season.

5. I'm still on the hunt for Juliet's Christmas outfit. I feel behind this year, I already had family photos done and ready to send Christmas cards at this point last year.  Hopefully by the end of this weekend!
